The bridge is built on the location of the old Freedom Bridge, which was designed from 1977 to 1978, built from 1978 to 1981 and destroyed during the NATO bombing in 1999. New bridge is designed with the mission to completely retain the look of the old bridge and to use old usable segments in the construction of the new bridge. 1978 Detail Design (autor Prof. Nikola Hajdin) and Tender Documents were the base background documents for design. The Freedom Bridge itself consists of the cable stayed bridge over the Danube River, with the orthotropic plate, 60+60+351+60+60 m spans and two approach bridges, as simple girder of composite cross-section with 60 m spans. The total width of the Bridge is 27,5 m. Structural analysis showed the need for numerous reinforcements and structure design changes even though the bridge has been analyzed practically according to the same standards as the old bridge.
Problems with the stresses, comparison stresses and plate buckling, caused such changes as in design are: orthotropic plate of new elements, stiffeners of the vertical webs and flanges, anchored elements for ties in a girder and pylons, ties and pins of eye bars, higher classes of structural steel for girder elements (S355 instead of S235). Approach bridges designed changes of are: steel class, double amount of reinforcing bars in the concrete slab.

Structural analysis for dismantling of the elements of the old structure remained from the Danube River clearance. Detailed design of the new bridge structure over the Danube River: Technical report, Structural analysis, Drawings – disposition and characteristic elements of the structure; Detailed design of the new structure for the approach bridge; Detailed Design and Workshop documentation of the barges reinforcement for bridge structure erection; Bridge erection analysis over the River. Bridge Structure design has been done according to the Serbian and German standards for road Bridges, in Serbian and English language.
